Thyroid Disease

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is a condition in which your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of certain crucial hormones. This condition may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Over time, untreated hypothyroidism can cause a number of health problems, such as obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart diseases

Treatments for Thyroid Disease

Thyroid function can easily be assessed and monitored by common blood tests which measure circulating levels of thyroid hormone (T4 and T3) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). The pituitary gland releases TSH to stimulate the thyroid to produce its hormones. High T4 and T4 and low TSH levels indicate that your thyroid gland is overactive, while high TSH with lower T4 and T3 may indicate underactive thyroid function. Other antibodies might be tested to assess the presence of certain autoimmune diseases.

While most causes of hyperthyroidism will require a referral to an
Endocrinologist, the use of T4, T3, or their combination for the treatment of hypothyroidism is commonly utilized in our practice.
